Robert Penchovsky

Full professor of molecular genetics, synthetic biology and bioinformatics, and head of the Laboratory of Synthetic Biology and Bioinformatics at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

We design RNA molecules that switch genes on and off, and antisense oligonucleotides that block bacterial riboswitches, as a route to new antibiotics.

Birthday artwork showing Robert Penchovsky conducting an RNA symphony with riboswitches, aptamers, ribozymes and logic gates.

Antisense oligonucleotides as new antibiotics

Chimeric antisense oligonucleotides, delivered by cell-penetrating peptides, that bind FMN, TPP, SAM-I and glmS riboswitch mRNAs and stop the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria and E. coli.
